Yesterday was a truly special day for us here at Limerick Animal Welfare, and we are still basking in its very warm afterglow! One of our great supporters, Niamh Coffey, organised a fun Sponsored Dog Walk, to take place from our sanctuary. This was such a milestone event. In previous years, we held sponsored dog walks to raise funds to get the construction of our sanctuary off the ground. It was heaven indeed then yesterday to be able to show our visitors our completed isolation unit, cat unit and rabbit run, and to offer them tea, coffee and cake from our kitchen! All of the animals enjoy a fuss, and even in the upper paddocks, our goats Cody, Mable and Ernest, and pot-bellied pigs Wayne and Colleen were all ears!
There was a fine turnout and we were joined by a lovely crowd of stalwart supporters and some friendly new faces, too. Those that hadn't brought their own dogs with them took our sanctuary dogs for a stroll. It was just heaven on earth for man and dog alike. The sanctuary is in a very quiet and beautful part of the countryside, on the slopes of the Ballyhouras. We are fortunate to have a way-marked trail passing right outside our front gate. The boreen winds its way uphill fringed with gorse bushes in full bloom and glorious green fields on either side, before entering the forestry and woodland at the summit. We made sure to warn everyone not to cheat and to wait until they had reached the top before turning around to enjoy the spectacular views of County Limerick, which spreads out below you to the horizon, like an emerald patchwork quilt. On a glorious sunny day like yesterday, you truly can count forty shades of green!
Our walkers enjoyed a repast of teas, coffees, biscuits and cakes on their return, laid on by Niamh and her helpers. The dogs were all happily tuckered out and absolutely thrilled with themselves, and they weren't left out either, as each got a dog biscuit (or three!)

The funds raised yesterday amount to €2,261.20. This will go towards funding Phase Two of our sanctuary, which will be the main building. Our heartfelt thanks to Niamh and to all who helped out or took part. It was so well worth all the hard work! All thoughts now turn to our annual Doggy Day at the sanctuary on September 14th. We hope to see you there!
